Life tells us many stories about love. We read and hear a lot of love stories, but unfortunately not all of them end with a happy ending. It’s especially hard when it happens to someone you know. It’s particularly affecting.
I recently met a good friend of mine, Anton. He is a wealthy, young man, married. We got to talking, exchanged a few phrases about nothing, and, as usual, asked him to say hello to his wife. And then he blurted out:
“My wife and I are going through a divorce.”
I was surprised. They had such a beautiful relationship. We all rejoiced, and it seemed to us, our friends, that this was a very strong family.
It turns out that he and his wife had decided to go on a cruise for two weeks for the first time in four years of married life. Everything was just fine!
But, an incident completely reversed the past relationship.
One day, they heard a noise on deck. It turned out that a 9-year-old boy had fallen overboard. The boy’s father screamed, he couldn’t swim and asked for help. Anton’s wife Kristina is an excellent swimmer, she immediately threw herself overboard with her clothes on. In short, the child was saved.
After this incident everyone was honored to say hello to Christina and shake her hand.
And how grateful the boy’s father was, there are no words. Vitaly is a wealthy man, he brought up his son alone, his wife died three years ago. They spent the whole evening together in the restaurant, talked about everything.
And then Anton began to notice that his wife had changed. She became distant from him.
And then the following happened. Christina began to spend the rest of the days on the cruise, not with Anton, but with new acquaintances. The boy never left her side.
After the cruise, she packed her things and moved to live with Vitaly and his son.
To Anton’s question, “Why?” Kristina said that she was very attached to the child, she herself could not have children.
This one surprised me, because it seemed to me that my friend’s family was strong enough.
I interrupted, Anton and asked:
“So she cheated on you, right under your nose! Because I always thought your relationship was about love. And then there’s this! How could she! Anton, how are you?”
Now Anton is getting his life together. He’s not seeing anyone yet.
He told me:
“You know, I don’t hold it against her. Because it’s fate. And if my wife, even if she is an ex-wife, is happy, that’s the most important thing for me.
I was surprised by his generosity and wisdom, and thought that not every man can do what he did. And I think he did a very wise thing. After all, he could have been angry at women for life and not believe in relationships anymore. But he was much wiser!
Generally, people’s relationships are the biggest mystery.
